Oracle text
Whenever you cast a noncreature spell, amass Orcs X, where X is that spell's mana value. (Put X +1/+1 counters on an Army you control. It's also an Orc. If you don't control an Army, create a 0/0 black Orc Army creature token first.)
Goblins and Orcs you control have ward 2.
Mox strategy
Saruman, the White Hand is a strong Grixis spells-matters commander or value engine. Its main strength is turning every noncreature spell into board presence, and the amass X trigger scales especially well with expensive instants, sorceries, and artifact/enchantment spells.
Best uses:
- Spell-heavy Commander decks that naturally cast lots of noncreature spells
- Grixis control or midrange shells that want a threat without committing creatures
- Orc/Goblin tribal or token builds that can benefit from the ward anthem
Key synergies:
- Big mana-value spells maximize amass, especially X spells and high-cost haymakers
- Copy effects and cheap cantrips help trigger it multiple times per turn
- Token and sacrifice support makes the Orc Army easy to grow or recur
- Goblin/Orc tribal pieces gain extra resilience from ward 2
Gameplay impact:
- Generates a single growing threat while you play normally
- Rewards sequencing noncreature spells efficiently
- Supports a grindy board state by making your token army harder to remove and your Goblins/Orcs more annoying to answer
Overall, it’s a solid build-around commander for a spells-focused deck, strongest when you can chain multiple noncreature spells in one turn and protect a growing Army.
