Mox strategy
Phage the Untouchable is a high-risk, high-reward finisher that wins games immediately if it connects with a player. Its main strength is the “one hit, you lose” pressure, plus it can also mow down any creature it damages. The huge drawback is that if you cheat it onto the battlefield from anywhere other than your hand, you lose the game, so it must be cast normally.
Best use cases are slow black control or combo shells that can clear blockers, grant evasion, or protect a single lethal attack. Strong synergies include:
- Unblockable or evasion effects like Whispersilk Cloak, Rogue’s Passage, or Fear-style effects
- Protection and combat support such as Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots, and removal to clear the way
- Bounce/replay lines only if you can still cast it from hand safely
Key mechanics it supports are combat-damage kill pressure, creature removal through combat, and “must-answer” threat forcing opponents to hold up interaction. In Commander, it is usually best as a flavorful win condition in a deck built specifically to cast and connect with it, not as a generic black staple.
