Oracle text
At the beginning of your upkeep, for each land target player controls in excess of the number you control, choose a land that player controls, then the chosen permanents phase out. Repeat this process for artifacts and creatures. (While they're phased out, they're treated as though they don't exist. They phase in before that player untaps during their next untap step.)
Mox strategy
Equipoise is a narrow but powerful white prison/control enchantment that punishes opponents who are ahead on lands, artifacts, and creatures by phasing their excess permanents out each upkeep. Its best use is in stax, resource-denial, or asymmetric board-control decks that can stay low on board and mana while keeping opponents pinned back.
Strongest when you:
- Play fewer lands/creatures/artifacts than the table
- Use token fodder, fast mana, or minimal board presence to stay under the threshold
- Want to buy time against go-wide or ramp strategies
Key synergies and combos:
- Works well with land-light control shells and decks that can operate off few permanents
- Pairs nicely with bounce/flicker or mass removal to keep opponents permanently behind
- Strong with effects that make your own permanents hard to count against you, like mana rocks or utility permanents only
Mechanics it supports:
- Asymmetric taxation through phasing, not destruction, so it dodges many death-trigger and graveyard recursion lines
- Keeps threatening boards ineffective for a full cycle
- Encourages careful board management and tempo advantage
Overall: a high-ceiling hate piece that can dominate creature-heavy and permanent-heavy tables, but it’s mediocre if you’re also developing the board aggressively.
