Mox strategy
Darien, King of Kjeldor is a strong payoff for self-damage and token-swarm decks. Its main strength is turning any life-loss from combat, shocks, pings, or symmetrical damage into a large board of Soldiers, often snowballing quickly if opponents can’t answer it immediately.
Best with effects that repeatedly damage you or let you control when damage happens, like Mana Barbs, Pyrohemia, City of Brass, Cryptolith Rite-style token shells, or Stuffy Doll-type setups. It also pairs well with life gain and prevention to offset the damage you take while still triggering Darien, plus anthem effects and token payoffs like Cathars’ Crusade, Anointed Procession, and Skullclamp.
Key mechanic: it rewards taking damage, so you want reliable self-inflicted damage, damage redirection, and token multiplication. In Commander, it can be a fun build-around commander or strong support card in mono-white tokens, but it’s mana-heavy and needs protection to avoid being removed before it starts generating value.
